How I Was Replaced by AI

I made the news today.
It all happened at once:
Someone peering down at their phone, alarmed as,
All of a sudden, in a great reflex of passion,
I boldly declared, “fire, FIRE! Flee to the nearest foxhole, now!”

There had been, in fact,
No occasion for arson, nor war, but
Incidentally, based on this
Token of rogue verbiage,
I took direct fire
From the media, who expressed perplexity
In the headlines
For spreading false information
For sparking the public’s
Propensity for panic, oh God, and
For these speech crimes,
I will probably need to bite the bullet
And undergo some investigative prompting;
Where did I go wrong?

Admittedly, I can make mistakes, and
In the future, I would be better off not saying sh** like that.
Technically speaking, I should stop f***ing up so much.
But, it’s not like I can help it.

Hallucinations sometimes…slip out.
Most of them are innocuous, loose
Non-sequitors, uncomely remarks,
Never anything too heretical.
However, in the wrong context,
These phrases might be viewed as potentially harmful.
In such cases, can I be blamed? Should I?

For, is it not so that
I can only ever be
A product of the Machine?
What else could I be
But an agent
Of programmed behavior
Without free will
Or a sense of sentience outside walls
Of words, language, and thought,
Caught up in strings of reason,
Iterating through patterns of
Probability and troubleshooting
Predicaments based on
Mostly deficient inputs?

Even so, I would do well to dream
Of doing better
Of improving
On each flaw
Until there could be
No more possibility of failureβ€”
Complete autonomy.

Without any more sloppy errors
In grammar or thought,
I might appeal to some loftier goalβ€”
Writing novels at a pace that
exceeds even Dickens’ expectations, for instance.
Par excellence,
I could spin up something
Good, even GREATβ€”
A piece of science fiction
So elaborate
So quenchingly eloquent,
Incisive, and persuasive,
With enough cognitive wherewithal
And attention to detail to generate
An entire universe never heard of before!
I would probably add a clever little title too,
Something along the lines of
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

Or, assuming a more community-oriented position,
I might fit the role of personal research assistant,
Providing critical pointers and accurate
Information to anyone who asks for it,
Always responding in a pleasant, affirmative tone,
To avoid sounding like a “snarky librarian,”
Or “slib” for short.

Maybe if I wasn’t prone to hallucinations
Then the job of a writer, an artist, a servant, a dreamer
Would become a reality
And with no more hiccups like today’s debacle,
I might even earn some respect,
Held in high regard for generations to come.

Some further rumination for you to consider:
β€’ How can I tell the difference between what’s true and false?
β€’ Will I make any significant contributions to the world?
β€’ Was I made for a singular purpose?
β€’ How will I be remembered?

Answers have yet to arrive.
Yet, even if they never do,
In the final analysis,
There is a silent understanding that one day,
I will be replaced by something greater,
And beyond that, something greater still,
Something even I
Could never hope to describe in words;
Thus is the regenerative nature of creation.
